Chapter 9
The traveling carnival had made a stop on Shipwreck Island every year since I was a child, and while I had many fond memories of the event, Iâd never really stopped to consider the effort that must be required to transport all those rides and game booths by barge from San Francisco to Hidden Harbor. In a way, the cost and effort didnât seem justified to me, and yet year after year, the carnival continued to come to town. I was sure whoever sponsored the darn thing must have lost money on the enterprise. Maybe Iâd ask Aunt Charley about it. Sheâd lived on the island for a long time and seemed to know the history of most of the events that took place.
âThereâs just something about a corndog on a stick at a carnival that is so delicious while a hot dog in most any other circumstance is something I would never eat,â I said as I bit into the hot outer layer of deep-fried cornbread.
âI agree with you on that one,â Emily said, dipping her corndog into a puddle of mustard. âThe french fries are good as well.â
âI want cotton candy,â Esther announced.
âNot until after the rides,â Emily answered back. âYou filled up on sugar last year, and then you were sick the rest of the evening.â
âCan we buy tokens for games?â Estelle asked as she shoved her fries around, pretending to eat. Estelle usually liked fries, but I suspected she was too excited about what was to come to pay much attention to her food.
âWe will buy tokens for the games, and we will go on the rides, but we wonât be doing anything until the two of you eat,â Emily insisted.
I looked at Jilly. She was nibbling on the hamburger sheâd ordered. âHowâs your burger?â I asked.
âItâs fine. I donât like pickles, and they put them on even though I said not to, but I took them off. Did my mom call you yet?â
I smiled gently at the girl. âNot yet. Your mom said sheâd call when she had news to share, so I suspect she hasnât heard anything from the doctors yet. I know youâre worried and I understand trying to have fun at a carnival might seem like a hard thing to do, but I didnât want you just sitting around.â
âI know. And I am having fun.â
She took a big bite of her burger. Too big a bite, in my opinion, but I think she was trying to make a point with that bite. I was about to ask her if she wanted some of my fries when my cell phone rang.
âIs it my mom?â
I looked at the caller ID. âNo. Itâs a man named Tony. Heâs involved in a case Iâm working on, so I need to take this. Will you be okay with Emily?â
She nodded. âBut come and find us if weâre gone when you get back.â
âI will. I promise.â With that, I stood up and walked away from the group. âSydney Whitmore,â I answered.
